Traffic is delayed for around 90 minutes on a section of the M25 after a “serious” lorry fire resulted in 10 miles (16.1 km) of congestion, National Highways says.

On Friday morning, the National Highways Agency said two lanes on the clockwise route between junction five, near Sevenoaks in Kent, and junction six, near Godstone in Surrey, were closed.

Surrey Police said it was made aware of the incident at around 01:30 and Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said it left the scene at around 03:15 as the fire had been extinguished.

Traffic monitoring site Inrix said one road was still closed at 10am but “severe delays” remained.

Delays were still expected despite the opening of another route

Just after 09.15, the National Highways said that the load of the truck had been removed and that the recovery of the vehicle could now begin – which would require a road to be closed temporarily.

Inrix explained that congestion had spread to the A25 through Sundridge, Oxted and Godstone.

Delays of around 45 minutes will also affect traffic traveling westbound on the M26 leading to the M25 at junction five, the National Highways Agency says.

He said resurfacing work was necessary and would be completed overnight, although it was unlikely the road would be completely closed.

The National Highways Agency said: “All roads will be open throughout the day once recovery work has been completed.”

Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said it attended the incident along with Kent Fire and Rescue Service and there was no causality.
